Columbia River and Mt. Hood - Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area, OR. and WA. At this point on October 29, 1805, the Corps could clearly see Mt. Hood's distinctive features. Early maps showed the snowcapped mountain as a prominent landmark. They then had an accurate estimate of their location and knew they were getting closer to the Pacific Ocean.
